Carnatic music
Carnatic music is one of the two styles of Indian classical music. It is associated with southern indian states.
The basic elements of carnatic music is sruti which is the pitch, raga is the mode, swara is the musical sound of single note, thala is the rhythmic cycle.
There are two types of ragas in Carnatic music in which there are seventy two melakartha ragas or parent ragas and Janya ragas are the ragas which are derived from them. There are thirty-five basic talas, although use of other angas results in a total of hundred and eight talas some of them are ata tala,dhruva tala,eka tala , jhamap tala ,Matya tala,rupaka tala and triputa tala.
Compositions of Carnatic music are Varnam ,Kriti , Geetham , Swarajati , Ragam Thanam Pallavi , Thillana.
The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music. Most compositions of carnatic music are written to be sung and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in a singing style.
Carnatic music is practiced and presented today by musicians in concerts or recordings, both vocally and with instruments.
